Reduced risk of damage through lighter, easier and safer carrying, generally 1/6th the weight of wooden crates. This helps avoid the need for forklifts on a much more regular basis than wooden crates. Forklifts are one of the biggest causes of damage to artworks through national and international transport. A good example is this 6 metre x 1.9 metre crate, designed for a 650kg sculptural marble top. This had to be carried by 12 people, thus the 12 sets of handles. The crate only weighed 45kg. By not making this crate out of wood, it reduced the overall carrying weight by 200kg. It provided brilliant protection for the transportation of this artwork. |
